Spam Turns 20, Bill Gates Proven Wrong

On April 12, 1994, “Green Card Lawyers” sent out a solicitation to more than 6,000 Usenet newsgroups across the web and spam was born. Today, 70 percent of all email worldwide is spam.

And what's the spam capital of the world? The United States, sending out 16.4% of the world's spam – over three times as much as its nearest 'competitor,' Spain. Belarus, on the other hand, gets the award for relaying the most spam per person.

Ten years ago at the 2004 World Economic Forum, Bill Gates famously predicted the end of spam within two years. Sorry Bill. Not even close.
